Courage Is A Muscle
Like most things in life, the more you use it the easier a skill can become. Courage is such a skill. I can truly attest to this. Many people will be surprised that courage in itself is a skill, because to many it is a one time action that is something that many people instinctively are or they aren’t.
The first misnomer is that courage is an attribute that some people either have or don’t have. But if you truly think about it. courage is pursuing any action despite of our inherent fear in moving forward. But anyone can remember a time in their lives that they just chose to act despite of their fear. That act is courage. And that act can become a skill that we hone, we nurture, and that we can grow.
Just like any skill, if we don’t use it, we certainly become weak in that skill or aspect of our lives.
Any skill that can improve our lives should be a skill that we work on.. The issue lies in the fact, that courage is indeed a skill, a muscle. The more you willfully act on courage in any form, the more we grow that skill, the more we grow that muscle.
I wanted to write about this as a reminder to myself that sometimes we get bogged down in a fixed mindset kind of thinking. The same thinking that Carol Dweck spoke about in her book MINDSET. Because many people are guilty in the thinking that they are just not courageous, it gets us all away from the fact that we can be courageous, we can develop the skill of being courageous from one task to another; from one situation to the next. Building that momentum of courage proves to us that courage can be developed and that we can grow in our own courage.
I think the fact that we can grown in our own courage can be so inspiring for many of us. Especially if we just don’t have many courageous moments or actions yet under our belt. It lets us know that we can develop courage in our own every day lives, and those acts of courage can propel us forward to even more acts of courage, so much so, that we start to grow in this mindset and prove to ourselves that the life we live is truly just an exercise in growth of a certain skill we call — COURAGE.
By the way, I want I want to properly cite and give credit to Anthony Robbins who wrote: Courage is a muscle, the more you demand it within yourself and take action, the more you grown and transform.
